ARE STUDENTS & STAFF SAFE?

Traditional Solutions Have Not Made Schools Safer

  • A comprehensive review of 18 years of reports on school security measures conducted by the University of Toledo and Ball State University concluded that “there is no evidence those measures have worked.”
  • Since the Columbine massacre in 1999, “more than 226,000 children at 233 schools have been exposed to gun violence. At least 143 children, educators and other people have been killed in assaults, and 294 have been injured.”
  • The year “2018 was the worst on record for school shootings and gun-related incidents.”

HOW PARENTS FEEL ABOUT SCHOOL SAFETY

Parents Have Safety Concerns

  • “53 percent of Americans are concerned that a mass shooting could happen at a school in their community.”

    -NPR Marist Poll (2/14/19)

  • Many parents have only tepid confidence in the ability of schools to stop a gunman
  • a large majority, 67%, say schools have become less safe.

-AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research Poll (March 14-18, 2019)

A majority of adults in the U.S. believe that “schools have become less safe” since the Columbine shooting over 20 years ago.

A SUPERIOR SOLUTION IS NEEDED TO KEEP KIDS SAFE
